ACC Sensitive Claims Support

In Aotearoa - New Zealand, all people who have experienced sexual abuse or sexual assault - whether the event(s) happened recently or in the distant past - have access to fully funded therapy if they need support. The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) Integrated Service for Sensitive Claims Contract (ISSC) is a service that provides assessment and treatment delivered by one or more mental health practitioners including clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, occupational therapists and cultural advisors. West Auckland Psychology has a comprehensive team of ACC approved therapists who are highly skilled and experienced in offering these services.

The experience of sexual abuse or sexual assault may profoundly impact upon many areas of a person’s wellbeing, including psychological, emotional health and physical health, and relationships within the family. The effects of sexual trauma can be extensive and highly distressing, producing symptoms such as ‘flashbacks’ (reliving the event as if it was happening right now), nightmares, or intense aversions to or avoidance of any reminders of the event(s). Sexual trauma may also manifest as negative beliefs about oneself, others, or life in general, lack of interest or delight in pleasurable activities, low mood, a sense of hopelessness, sleep disturbances, and various forms of anxiety. Other common effects include irritability or problems with controlling anger, relationship difficulties, a low sense of self-esteem, difficulty concentrating, feeling ‘spaced out’ or disconnected, and other disturbances or difficulties.

The negative effects of sexual trauma can be compounded when an individual feels betrayed or unsupported by people in whom they thought they could place their trust. It is not uncommon, therefore, for injured people to lose trust in others and become reluctant or anxious about reaching out for help. Therapists at West Auckland Psychology who work with sensitive claimants understand the courage it takes to seek support for these issues. We have a team of sensitive mental health practitioners who can create a therapeutic environment wherein clients feel comfortable and safe. You may contact us via email to initiate the process of lodging an ACC sensitive claim.
